Jumping Cat Sith
Legend has it a large black cat with a white spot on the chest haunts the Scottish Highlands. It walks on all fours when humans are around but stands upright when no one is looking.
Preferring to meet your gaze with back arched and bristles on end, some say it is actually a fairy while others say a witch who could transform into a cat nine times.
The Cat Sìth, also known as the Cat Sidhe or Cait Sidhe in Ireland, is pronounced “caught shee” and is translated as “fairy cat.” A creature from Celtic mythology, more common in Scottish folklore with a few occurrences in Irish fable.
It is said this creature is not to be trusted as it's believed it will steal a person's soul before claimed by the gods - by jumping over the newly dead!
Therefore watches called feill fadalach were preformed night and day to keep the cat sith away. Methods of distraction devised to keep the cat away from the soul it came for included games of wrestling, riddles, music and tasty dishes of catnip and fish. In addition to these tactics no fires were to be lit in the same room as a body awaiting burial as the warmth would attract the creature (what cat doesn't like laying next to a fire?) and occasionally fires were lit in opposing rooms to lead the cat astray.
But it's not all bad, for it is also said that on Samhain the Cat Sith will bless a house that leaves out a saucer of milk. And for those who don't? Well they would be cursed the following year; most notably their cows would produce no milk. For if the cat sith can't have a saucer of milk on Samhain, then no one can!
Handcrafted out of solid sterling silver, this Cat Sith cradles a piece of cat-eye tourmaline. A rare and valuable and stone, this large piece of tourmaline is a dark green color, almost black in indirect light but once the sun hits it? An incredibly vivid and sharp green cat-eye emerges!
Measuring approximately 1.75" x 1.60" at widest points and weighs approximately just over one ounce. It is strung from a sterling 17" chain with toggle clasp.
