Supernatural Superstitions & Lore
Thread to the Underworld
In revisiting this superstition, I chose to incorporate more than just one practice or belief, giving this particular pendant beautiful complexity.
It is said that no person lie in a coffin, even for fun, and no item of clothing belonging to a living person should ever be put on a corpse when it is placed in the grave. For as it rots in the ground, so too will the living owner's health begin to decline in step. This connection acts a devilish thread from the dead to the living.
But the "thread" in this piece also represents the cycle of death and rebirth. The red string in the stone acting as the flower's stem, connecting its new bloom to those fallen below. This thread reaches deep through the ground to bones, which nourish and give up themselves in giving life anew.
And lastly, there was a period of time in which the fear of a loved one being buried alive inspired coffin makers to design warning systems such as a grave bell connected by a chain or string to the inside of the coffin so in case of premature burial, the alive could ring from the grave.
I have held onto this stone for years. It is a piece of included quartz and is complete natural! The "thread" is a section of the crystal which has been mineral stained (likely hematite or iron). It is extraordinarily unusual for it to occur in such a confined and controlled space as this! I have never seen this before nor likely never will again.
Handcrafted out of solid sterling silver, this piece measures approximately 2.25" x 1.50" at widest points and weighs approximately just over 1 ounce. It is strung from a thick and sturdy chain which measures 16" long and offers a toggle clasp.
As always, all stones are genuine, valuable and ethically sourced and cut.
